Case Story: Managing Execution

The journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one’s feet.

A large hospital system encompassing several institutions wanted to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction, lower turnover, and realize cost savings by consolidating OB/GYN services across three hospitals. A multi-year, capital-intensive strategic initiative such as this, impacting hundreds of employees, relies on well-planned and deliberate execution throughout all its stages.

A solid start.

As a first step, DSI conducted an Execution Readiness Assessment to help the Board, senior management, and functional teams assess the project scope, requirements, feasibility, and gaps that needed to be addressed prior to implementation of this $500M investment. In addition, we worked with them to mitigate risks and ensure smooth and sustained execution, such as maintaining a sense of urgency among stakeholders, ensuring effective, phased communication, and establishing well-defined near-term metrics and milestones. Having developed the tactical roadmap and signposts for the initiative, the group is now well on the path to achieving their goal of improving and consolidating OB/GYN care across the system. As one executive remarked, the Execution Readiness tool “crystallized our thinking and provided a good framework for ongoing planning.”
